ORGANIZE YOUR SSAT ESSAY

Opening Paragraph: Introduction

* Put the topic in your own words. Show them you understand it.

*State your opinion.

Some words you can use if you’re agreeing with the topic: support, endorse, advocate, uphold, maintain, and strengthen.

Some words you can use if you’re disagreeing with the topic: oppose, differ, dispute, counter, and contest.

* Introduce your examples.

Body Paragraph: First Example

* State your first example and explain how it supports your opinion.

Assume the burden of responsibility for making your point clear to the reader.

Body Paragraph: Second Example (More important than First!)

* Use a transition word or phrase to make the transition from preceding paragraph to this one.

You can point out the similarities or differences that the two examples have, or in some way show that they are related. “Another example of……..” can always be used.

* State your second example and explain how it supports your opinion.

Final Paragraph: Conclusion

* Paraphrase your opinion.

* End with “The Kicker,” a final sentence that shows the wider significance of your opinion.

Some words you can use to show you’re concluding your essay: in conclusion, therefore, clearly, consequently, or thus.
