Should Schools Celebrate Holidays?

Back on  October 17, 2011, Education Nation reported on Ann Foley, a Massachusetts elementary principal, who in a memo to her staff voiced anger  over holidays surrounding historical events and went so far as to ban students from dressing up for Halloween. Foley also raged about the events surrounding Thanksgiving, highlighting the faults of Christopher Columbus and the Pilgrims. She stated that     “teachers should be careful about celebrating Columbus Day and Thanksgiving”. The Mayor of the Sommerville Community responded by saying “History is messy”.

What do you think?

At the elementary level, can holidays just be fun or do they need to be accurate depictions of what Foley termed  the “atrocities” of the historical events?
