Thanksgiving Trivia

Here are some interesting facts about Thanksgiving to share with your friends and family:

  • Franklin Roosevelt moved the Thanksgiving holiday up one week to stimulate the economy. Congress was not pleased and in 1941 ruled that Thanksgiving always be celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November
    (and made it a Federal Holiday).
  • It is rumored that a male turkey is called a “Tom Turkey” after Thomas Jefferson. Apparently Ben Franklin coined the name in response to Thomas Jefferson refusing to have the turkey as our National bird.
  • In 1947 Harry Truman pardoned a turkey and had it sent to Frying Pan Park in Herndon, Virginia. Every year the current President follows this tradition.
  • A turkey dinner was the first meal eaten on the moon by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldren.
  • In the 1927 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the first balloon was Felix the Cat.
  • Turkeys can drown if they look up in the rain.
